Lewis passed to his eternal reward at the Clark Memorial home at Grand Rapids, where he was taken only a few weeks ago, Tuesday. Mr. Lewis had been a resident of Ionia since 1888. For many years he was prominent as a contractor and builder. He was superintendent of construction of the Methodist church and of the State Reformatory. He did the carpenter work on the Fred Hall house, now the Hall-Fowler memorial library building, and had the contract or was in charge of the building of several other of the best private buildings in the city. Later he was in the grocery business, which he conducted for twenty years, retiring eight or nine years ago. For the past three or four years he has been unable to do any work. He was 79 years old. He was twice married, both wives preceding him across the dark river. Two children survive: Ed., a passenger engineer on the Chicago & Alton, and Carrie, in the asylum at Traverse City. He was a member of the Methodist church, and active in church during his prime. The remains of H.M. Lewis were brought to Ionia from Grand Rapids and the funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Methodist church. The remains were taken to the undertaking rooms of Winchell and Stone.
