M. Lewis, was found dead Tuesday night shortly before ten o’clock. The form was discovered by Harley Preston, prostrate upon the sidewalk in front of the residence of Fred Williams on North Rich street. Mrs. Lewis was troubled with organic heart trouble, hence the cause of her death is not a matter of surprise, but just how or why she happened to be at this out-of-way spot is a matter surrounded with much mystery. She was a member of the city missionary committee of the M. E. church, and was much given to doing kindly missionary deeds, and was known to spend evenings in this Christian work, hence there are those who urge that she was out on one of her usual missions of mercy. There are others who believe that in one of her periodical attacks of heart trouble, she had sought the open air, and in her walk wandered to the spot where she was found. Her course from home, beyond doubt, was north on Union street to Fargo, thence east to Rich, and thence south. The footprints are easily followed in the sand on Fargo street to Rich. She had on her head when she left home a black knit nubia, a shawl for shoulder covering, and had on her house apron. The street and place where the body was found was dark, and Mr. Preston was in doubt as to the safety of approaching the form, thinking it a man, and went in search of aid. He soon found Marshal Redemsky, and together they went back, with a lantern, and found the body to that of a woman. The shawl was found carefully arranged for a pillow under her head and shoulders, the which would indicate that Mrs. Lewis had laid down for a moment’s rest as a treatment for the attack. Just how long she had lain before being found no one knows, but it must have been two hours or more, as the body was cold and stiff in death when found. Coroner Joslin and Undertaker Allured were at once summoned, and the body of deceased was taken to her late home on Union Street. A coroner’s jury, composed of Harley Preston, Charles Kruger, Edw. N. Pelzer, Ben Preston Jr., Milo Scott and John Young, Jr. was summoned Wednesday a.m. and in the afternoon inquired into the case, at office of Nesbitt & McKenna. Marshall Redemsky, Dr. R. Logan and Harley Preston were examined as witnesses, and Dr. Joslin, who had attended deceased in her lifetime, made a statement of her physical condition. The jury thereupon rendered a verdict that death was caused by organic heart trouble. The six sons of Mrs. H. M. Lewis, by former marriage, Thomas, John, William, Frank, Art and Hal Dunn, have arrived from their several distant homes to attend the burial of their mother. Mrs. John Moor, of Ionia township, and Mrs. Fred Duning, of this city, are also children of deceased. The funeral of Mrs. H. M. Lewis will be attended from the M. E. church, at 2:30 p.m. today.
