Loses Oldest Local Member At 92. Succumbs At Home of Grandson In Ionia, Will Be Buried Here. Word was received by local friends Sunday evening of the death of Wilbur H. Locke, 92, former resident of this city. Since the last of May Mr. Locke had made his home with his grandson, Allen B. Locke, of Ionia. His health had been very poor and for weeks during the summer a nurse was employed to attend him. About a week ago Mr. Locke was taken ill with a cold. No particular alarm was felt for his condition until Sunday afternoon when he grew much worse, death coming early in the evening. Mr. Locke was a pioneer in Ionia county, being born to Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Russell Locke, also pioneers, in June, 1841. He had spent the entire years of his life in this county with the exception of four years that he served his country during the Civil war. Mr. Locke enlisted with the third cavalry and saw much active service during that time. We understand that at the time of his death, Mr. Locke was the oldest surviving member of the G. A. R. in Ionia county. He held his membership in the local unit but was seldom in attendance at the meetings due to infirmities. At the age of 25 Mr. Locke was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Parker, then a school teacher in New York. To this union were born two sons, Charles P. and Alfred R., both former lawyers in Ionia and both deceased. In 1930 Mrs. Locke was called to rest after having shared 64 years as companion to Mr. Locke. Since that time Mr. Locke had remained in the home on Pleasant street, better remembered as the Henry Patterson property which the Locke’s purchased in the fall of 1921. This fine old couple made many friends in this city and when their home was broken up three years ago, it was greatly regretted by the community.
