He was 53 years of age at the time of his death and has been a lifelong resident of this county. His funeral services will be under the auspices of Ionia Masonic bodies Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the home, and burial will be in Belding, in accordance with the wishes of Mr. Locke. Born in Easton township in 1868, Alfred R. Locke had maintained his home in Ionia county while serving his city, county, state, and nation in various public capacities. He was married in 1891 to Miss Ona Morse, daughter of Joseph Morse, of Otisco, who survives him. Surviving him also are his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Locke, residing here. From 1892 until 1895 Mr. Locke was United States deputy consul at Glasgow, Scotland, during the time that Judge A. B. Morse was consul there. For 20 years he served the state of Michigan faithfully as a member of the board of control of the Michigan reformatory. In 1912 and 1914 he served Ionia county as prosecuting attorney, and he served the city of Ionia as city attorney and as a member of the board of education for a number of years. Prominently identified with politics here, he had always maintained an active affiliation with the democratic party. Mr. Locke graduated from the Michigan Agricultural college in 1890, studied law and entered the law office of Judge A. B. Morse. Later he was a partner in the firm of Locke & Sheldon, succeeding his partner, Dwight Sheldon, as prosecuting attorney at the time of Mr. Sheldon’s death. Until recently he was associated with George E. Nichols in the law firm of Nichols & Locke, and at the time of his death was senior partner in the firm of Locke & Mathews. He was admitted to the bar in 1891 and was a member of the county and state bar associations. He was a member of the Ionia Masonic lodges, the Elks, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and Sons of Veterans. The Masons will have charge of the funeral services Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, city time. Previous to his death Mr. Locke had expressed his wishes regarding the details of his funeral, and these will be carried out. Out of respect for the memory of Alfred R. Locke, the dinner of the Exchange club which was to have been held Tuesday at noon has been postponed until Thursday noon of this week. Mr. Locke was a charter member of the Exchange club and one of the most active in its organization. Friends are asked please to omit flowers for the funeral of Mr. Locke.
