Dec. 16, 2009 Helen V. Lockwood, 91, of Belding, died Monday morning Dec. 14, 2009 under the loving care of her family. Helen was born on July 4, 1918 in Otisco Township, the daughter of Clayton and Florence Sloan Baker. She graduated from Belding High School with the Class of 1934. For many years Helen was involved with many groups and organizations. She was active in the 4-H, served as a judge for the Ionia Free Fair and was involved with the Red Cross in teaching CPR. She was a past member of the Macaabees in Smyrna, the Belding Literary Club, the Belding Gardeners and was a past winner of the Belding’s Woman of the Year award. She played the piano and enjoyed crossword puzzles and knitting. Helen was very talented being able to cook without using any recipes and could sew many of the clothes her family would wear, all sewn without the use of any patterns. She had a lifelong love of nature and her family. Helen was married on March 26, 1936 to Richard Lockwood and he preceded her in 2008. She was also preceded by her parents, son Gary Lockwood, son–in-law Dennis Sower and a great-granddaughter Kearstin Lewis. She is survived by her children, JoAnn Manino of Grand Rapids, Harvey (Loretta) Lockwood of Greenville, Ken (Patricia) Lockwood of Hobbs, N.M. and Lynda Sower of Belding; 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; her sister and brother-in- law Bet and Marion Galloway of Belding and her brother Clayton (Ann) Baker of Belding. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Interment will follow in Smyrna Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alvah N. Belding Library.
