Lockwood, 77, was found dead in Grand River one mile west of Ionia at 1:45 p.m. Friday, more than 12 hours after police and sheriff’s officers had started an intensive search for him. Lockwood’s body was found lodged in the [unreadable] lying in Grand River just south of the old Babcock farm on old M-21, a mile west of Ionia. His body was found Friday afternoon by four Ionians as they were preparing to launch a boat to begin search of the river. They were Deputy Sheriff Peter VanVleck, Conservation Officer Lewis Kahl, Roger Dean and Sidney Russell. The four men had gone to the river to launch the boat after discovering that Lockwood had passed on the highway a short distance away. [Unreadable] found his shoes, glasses, and hat on the bank of the river as they lifted the boat from its trailer. The body was found in the river about 20 rods downstream. Deputy VanVleck said he believed Lockwood took his own life. Lockwood disappeared early on Thursday morning, and Ionia officers were asked to aid in the search at mid-afternoon Thursday. A former Michigan reformatory guard, Lockwood had been well known in Ionia city, where he sold baked goods for his wife in a business operated by the couple. Deputy VanVleck said members of the family reported Lockwood appeared worried and excited concerning his sales tax account in connection with his bakery wrote. His accounts were being checked by a department representative, it was reported.
