Robert J. Long, 81, of Portland died Aug. 7, 1996.

Mr. Long was born in Houghton County on Aug. 20, 1914. He was a member of 
Portland United Methodist Church; he retired in 1971, after 26 years of 
service, from his position as a lieutenant with the Lansing Police Department, 
and he organized and set up the security system for St. Lawrence Hospital, 
retiring from that position in 1983.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; one daughter, Darlene (Thomas) Linhart of 
Orangeburg, S.C.; two sons, James of Sunfield and David (Debra) Long of Flint; 
five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 10 at Portland United Methodist Church, with Rev. 
Elaine Buker officiating. Interment followed at North Eagle Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the church or to Ionia County Hospice.
