Long; Dies in Toledo Funeral services for William G. Longe, prominent Ionia businessman who died last Friday in Toledo, Ohio at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Koerber, were held Monday, March 10, from SS. Peter and Paul church. Mr. Longe who was 81 when he died, had long been identified with various activities in this community, chief of which was operating his own meat market and grocery for over 56 years. Death followed an illness of more than a month at his daughter’s home. In robust health until last summer when he suffered a heart ailment, Mr. Longe had fought his way back to good health when he was again taken sick, shortly after Christmas, in Toledo. Immediately relatives were summoned and were at the bed side when he lapsed into a coma about 24 yours before his death. Regarded for many years as one of the most popular merchants in Ionia and vicinity, Mr. Longe operated his own slaughter house and market. He was noted for his powerful strength. Born in Fredonia, New York, March 5, 1860, the popular merchant came to Ionia when he was a small boy. In 1880 Mr. Longe was married to Mary E. Kenny, who died November 6, 1892. His second marriage took place in 1893 when he married Mary Ellen Evans who died in 1933. He had been connected with the meat business since he first started in the market of W.F. Skammel at the corner of Rich and Main. A short time later he was employed by the Scammel and Rich Market where he worked for several years. When Mr. Rich sold out his interest, Mr. Longe purchased it. After fire destroyed the market he went into business with John H. Welch with whom he was associated for a number of years. Following Mr. Welch’s death several years later his interests were purchased by Mr. Longe who with various members of the family continued to operate the same until early in 1940 when he sold the business to Herbert Ross. Business men and a legion of his friends were deeply shocked at the news of his death. Always a person who had a cheery hello he will be sadly missed here in Ionia where his name meant one of honesty and true friendship. As one merchant spoke of him the other day, Mr. Longe did not have a single enemy in Ionia. He was every body’s friend. Never forgetting his friends or his family, he endeared himself to all those who knew him. Survivors are: Seven children, 18 grandchildren. His daughters are: Mrs. Charles Koerber of Toledo Ohio, Mrs. Larry Tansey of Detroit. Sons: Jorn, Robert, Donald, all of Detroit and William C. of Ionia.
