Longstreth, 63, of Portland, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at her home. She was born on April 29, 1943 in Harbor Beach, MI the daughter of Julius and Elnora (Wilson) Winkel. Barb was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church. She was the church organist for 38 years, and served the church in other various ways: Sunday School Teacher, Children’s Choir, Adult & Children Handbell Director, Lay Speaker, Praise Band pianist, Lay Delegate to annual conference, Director of Children’s Music Ministries, and served on the Board of Directors for Sunny Bunch Christian Preschool. Barb was an honorary member of the National Honor Society, graduated from MSU in 1966 with a B.A. in Elementary Education and a M.A. in Elementary Education in 1969. She was a kindergarten teacher for Portland Public Schools from 1968- 1984, a 5th grade teacher from 1984-1993, and a 3rd-5th grade Multi-age Teacher until 1993. She served as an accompanist for the Portland High School Choir and for many productions of the Portland Civic Players. She was a piano and organ teacher for many years in Portland. Barb was Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts, a Girl Scout Leader and member of the Michigan Education Association and National Education Association. She was preceded in death by her father, Julius Winkel. Surviving are her husband of 40 years, John; son Christopher and Sharon Longstreth of East Grand Rapids; daughter, Julie and her fiancé, Thomas Tkach of Portland; grandchildren, Samuel and Emily Longstreth; Mother, Elnora Winkel; sister-in- law, Mary Z. Longstreth of Indianapolis, IN; and many, many friends and countless students. The Funeral Service was conducted by Rev. Paul Bailey August 9 at the Portland High School Auditorium. Interment was in Portland Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland. For those wishing , memorial contributions may be made to the Barbara W.
