Loper, 79, Belding, passed away Monday, March 17, 1997, at his residence. He was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Berlin Township, the son of Joseph and Myrtle Hancock Loper. He graduated from Muir High School, class of 1935. He was employed for 41 years in the machine shop at Gibson’s, retiring in 1980. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Belding, the Greenville Moose Lodge and a former president and vice president of the UAW-AFL union. He was married Sept. 27, 1941, in Owosso to Hulda Hansbarger. She survives with their children, Mary and Richard Reeves, Mike and Cheryl Loper, all of Belding, Joseph and Jane Loper of Dayton, Ohio, 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Helen Cottrell of Ionia. He was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Loper Jr., in 1982, two sisters, Lula Lewis, Marvel Gage, and two brothers, Leonard and Charles Loper. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, Belding, with the Rev. Dick Woodward officiating. Interment will be in River Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, Belding. Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church or Ionia Area Hospice.
