Joseph “Joe” Loughlin, 85 of South Ionia passed away Feb. 17, 2002 at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital in Ionia. He was born on March 21, 1916 in Ada, the son of James and Louise (Kelley) Loughlin. He married the former Arlene Byrne on Nov. 30, 1946. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from St. Patricks High School in Parnell in 1933. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Ionia and a member of the Ionia Knights of Columbus where he was past Grand Knight. He was a member of the C.C.C. from 1935 to 1936. Joe worked for 32 years for Michigan Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1978. Surviving are his wife, Arlene; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James (Catherine) Byrne of Ionia, Daniel Kerwin of Grand Rapids, Leah Gerdeman of N. Baltimore, Ohio, and Pauline Loughlin-Stout of Belding; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Richard and Charles Loughlin. Mass of the Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Wednesday from SS. Peter and Paul Church in Ionia with Fr. Melvin Fox as presider. The organist will be Mary Cusack. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Parnell. Visiting hours will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Rich St. Chapel of Cook Funeral Home in Ionia.
