Borden post, G.A.R. one of its oldest members. Although born in New Hampshire, Mrs. Lovrien has lived the greater part of his life in Ionia and for over one-half a century in the present neighborhood of East Main street, which was his home until he went to Grand Rapids a short time to visit his daughter, where he was taken sick. He was a member of the Twenty-first Michigan regiment and served throughout the period of the Civil war. He affiliated with the William H. Borden post shortly after its organization and as long as he was able to attend the meetings, he was a familiar figure among the old veterans. After the close of the war he served as an engineer on the Pere Marquette railroad, then known as the Ionia and Lansing railway. He leaves a son, Edward Lovrien, of Ionia, and the daughter, Mrs. Estabrook of Grand Rapids. Subsequent Publication: The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, March 14, 1930 The flag before the residence of the late Charles B. Lovrien, East Main street, fluttered at half mast Thursday, just as it had done often in the past when a Civil war veteran died. Mr. Lovrien, during his lifetime there, had made it a rite to pay reverence to the memory of each of his comrades as they passed on before him, by flying at half mast on the flag staff he had set up in his yard, the flag under which they had fought in the war of the rebellion. Thursday the flag carried it message of sorrow in memory of Mr. Lovrien himself, whose funeral services were held in the afternoon. Rev. Paul L. Stewart conducted the services for Mr. Lovrien, which were held from the Church of Christ at 2:30 o’clock. In attendance were members of the Masons, an order which Mr. Lovrien joined before the Civil war, and members of the Women’s Relief corps. Services at the church were followed by the Masonic ritual at the grave, and bearers were members of the Masonic order, Dr. J. J. Culp, Louis P. Essick, Fred J. Owens, W. T. Smith, Henry Voelker, E. W. Krainbrink. Singing was by Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. R. A. Colwell, accompanied by Mrs. F. C. Bloomer. The sounding of taps by Lieut. Chester Black over the flag draped casket completed the funeral rite.
