Melvin R. Lowry, 22, former compositer at the Banner-News died early Sunday morning from injuries suffered when the car he was riding in was struck by another at the junction of M-44 and US-131, Friday night. Lowry was employed by the Rockford Register at the time of the accident. According to investigating State Police from the Rockford post, Lowry suffered brain injuries when the car in which he was riding was hit by another from Cadillac. His companion and the occupants of the other car were hospitalized also. The driver of the car in which Lowry was riding, Lyle LaPree, 23, also of Rockford, was reported in fair condition in St. Mary’s hospital, Grand Rapids with internal injuries. Jack Benson, 21 occupant of the other car, was hospitalized with right leg and hand fractures and severe face and leg lacerations. His companion, Charles J. Zegoski, 19, was treated at St. Mary’s for face cuts, a finger fracture and a right knee injury. Lowry, the father of three children, was born in Bancroft, March 20, 1938, and had lived in Indiana and at Long lake. He was married in Belding to Sandra Lake, June 8, 1957. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Tammy Jo, 3 and Kimberly Kay, 5 months, and a son, Melvin, Jr., 2. Other survivors are his step-father, Alton Perry; and his mother, Mrs. Priscilla Perry, of Belding; three sisters, Mrs. Howard (Joan) Cook, Pewamo, and Miss Shirley Perry, Ionia, and Mrs. Terry (Virginia) Wood, Ionia; three brothers, George and Douglas Correll of Ionia and Richard Perry of rural Belding. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Huffman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gerald Bowen of Bostwick lake officiating and burial was in the Orleans cemetery.
