Lucas, 90, of Ionia, died Thursday, March 19 at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital in Ionia. Gerald was born January 12, 1908, in Sterling, the son of Adam and Ada Lucas. After his retirement from the Ionia Armory as custodian, he worked as a school crossing guard. Gerald was one of the first to become involved in the Child Watch program in Ionia. He also performed lawn mower repair as a hobby. Lucas is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ruth L. (Tingley); four daughters, Joan (Bernard) Belanger, Gladys (Lloyd) Hartford, Marjorie Johnson, Lynn Ann (John) Barbara; three sons, Kenneth (Marge) Lucas, Richard (Barb) Lucas, Harold (Nancy) Lucas; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Joanna (Bob) Bailey of Ionia, Geraldine (Roger) Conner of Lowell, Richard (Nancy) Rice of Belding; 11 step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Funeral and Committal Services for Mr. Lucas will be held Monday, March 23, at 1 p.m., at the Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, with Rev. James Bennet of the First Baptist Church, Ionia officiating. Interment will be in Balcom Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home.
