Mrs. Sarah Luce, one of the pioneers of this section and a woman highly respected and esteemed by all who knew her, died in the Soldiers' Home hospital in Grand Rapids, last Saturday. Sarah Maria Rossman was born May 5, 1846, in Metamora, Lapeer county, Mich., and when a mere child, came to the Grand river section with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rossman, locating a few miles northwest of this city. She was united in marriage to James Henry Luce, Nov. 12, 1865, just after the close o the rebellion, in which war Mr. Luce took an active part for about three years. To this union was born four children, as follows; Arthur, the eldest, died of diphtheria when ten years old; Mrs. Homer Cook, now a resident of Lyons; Bert Luce, of this city; and Carrol, the youngest child, died Feb. 1, 1899. Besides the daughter and son now living, she is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, as follows; Mrs. Mary Lamb and John Rossman, of Belding; Mrs. Libbie Leonard, of Portland; and Will Rossman, of Arbor Beach. Mr. Luce died three years ago and since then the deceased has been In failing health. For the past two years her suffering has been intense and the amputation of a limb became necessary. Last September she concluded to enter the hospital department of the Soldiers' Home in Grand Rapids, where she had implicit faith in the attending physicians to restore her strength and enable her to walk. Recently she became discouraged and expressed a desire to go to the home of her daughter, where a large commodious room had been prepared for her reception. Then the Master of the vineyard called her to her eternal home Saturday, January 24, 1914. She was a charter member of the Dan S. Root Post Woman's Relief Corps and for several years served as its secretary. During her long illness, Mrs. Luce often expressed her faith in the undying love of her Saviour and she is now resting in that place prepared by the Father where are many mansions not made with hands. Only a few days before her death she wrote to her sister saying, "I feel that my sickness if from my Heavenly Father, to bring me to his feet that I may see his kingdom." Funeral services were held at the home of her son, Bert Luce, Tuesday, at two o'clock in the afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. E. Doty. Interment in the family burial lot in Otisco cemetery.
