Lake Odessa Wave, 15 Jan 1942

Rev. Alexander T. Luther, a retired minister of the Methodist church passed away
at his home in Ionia, Wednesday morning at the age of 87.  Rev. Luther was born
in 1854 near Detroit.  He graduated from the high school in Ionia in 1881, and
from Evanston Theological seminary in 1886, and was active in the Methodist
ministry for probably 35 years.  Four of this time he was pastor of the Lake
Odessa Methodist church.  During the World War he lost his son Olin in that
service in France.  He served other pastorates at Lowell, North Lansing, St.
Louis, Maple Rapids, Ovid, Holland, Grand Rapids, and Paw Paw.  For 11 years he
served as secretary-treasurer for the Lincoln hospital at Rochelle, Ill.

July 25, 1883 he married Miss Etta M. Talcutt of Ionia and to this marriage came
five children, three sons Edward, Earl, and Olin, and two daughters, Blanche and
Clara.  The family were in Lake Odessa when these children were young people and
the family added much to the social features of the church at that time.  For 17
years Mr. and Mrs. Luther have been retired, living at their home in Ionia.  He
has served as substitute for pastors occasionally during this time.

The funeral will be held Saturday in the Methodist church at Ionia when several
ministers will assist in the services.  His grandsons will act as pall bearers.
 Burial will be at Ionia.  

Surviving are his widow Etta, Rev. Edward T. Luther of Portland, Ore., Dr. Earl
O. Luther of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. B.F. Carter of East Lansing, and Mrs. Howard C.
Lawrence of Grand Rapids.  There are 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
