Joyce was born at home in Portland to Riley and Anis Sandborn on Jan. 21, 1929. She graduated from Portland High School in 1945, attended Bi-County Normal in Stanton, and graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelors and masters degree. Joyce worked at Fisher Body for a few years, taught eight years in rural school including Roxand Center, Section School and Goddard School, taught five years in Sunfield and retired from Portland Public Schools in 1986 with 17 years of service. Joyce was a Past Worthy Matron of Mulliken Chapter #161 Order of the Eastern Star. Joyce enjoyed garage saling, shopping, going to jam sessions, eating out a Wendy’s and spending special times with sisters and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents, Riley and Anis; and brother Howard Sandborn of Portland. Joyce will be dearly missed by her two children, Gerald (Nancy) Lyon of Portland, and Diane (Isidro) Torres of Mission, Texas; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Other survivors include sisters, Maxine Volk and June Higbee from Eagle, Janet (Gerald) Gilbert of Sunfield, Bonnie (Marvin) Jameson of Lansing, Judy (Al) McCrumb of Middleville, Betty (Tom) Russell of Pewamo; and brothers Riley Jr., (Mackie) Sandborn, Richard (Marcia) Sandborn and Kendall (Barbara) Sandborn of Portland, Louis (Mary) Sandborn of Jonesboro, Ark., and Gary Sandborn of Lansing. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the Portland Church of the Nazarene, 9466 Cutler Road. Services are under the direction of Pastor Daniel Stemen. Arrangements are being entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Eaton Community Hospice at 2675 S.
