Lyons Dies On Monday Joseph M. Lyons, 63, Ionia automobile dealer and a resident here 22 years, died suddenly about 9:30 p.m. Monday about one and one-half hours after he suffered a heart attack at his home while shoveling snow in an effort to free his automobile. Mr. and Mrs. Lyons had driven into the driveway of their home at 222 High street when the car became stuck in the heavy snow of the afternoon. He had freed the car when he became ill and went to the house to lie down. He suffered a heart attack there and was removed to the Ionia County Memorial hospital where he died a short time later. At the time of his illness his son, Walter, with whom he was associated in the automobile business, was at the hospital with his wife, who had been taken there by ambulance a few hours earlier when she became seriously ill. Her condition was improved Tuesday. Born May 18, 1896 in Petoskey, Mr. Lyons attended school there and on November 23, 1920 married Alice J. Coveyou at Petoskey. In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Lyons moved to Grand Rapids where he became identified with the automotive mechanical field and was regarded as one of the finest mechanics in Grand Rapids. In 1938 Lyons became associated with Ned. C. Berger, then of Grand Rapids, now of Ionia. The two men formed the Berger-Lyons Chevrolet agency in Ionia. In December 1941 Mr. Lyons left the firm to established his own agency, the Jos M. Lyons Pontiac agency and later he gave up that franchise and has since been the Ionia American Motors representative located on South Kidd street. Since his return from service in World War II, Walter Lyons, his son, has been associated with him in the agency. During World War I Mr. Lyons served four years with the United States Navy. He has been a member of the Ionia American Legion post for many years. He also was a member of the Ionia Garden club and a past president of that organization. His hobby was the raising and caring for roses at his High street home where he spent many hours. He has been a member of the Ionia SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church. Surviving are his wife, Alice, son, Walter; a daughter, Mrs. John (Bonnie) Minelli of Rogers City, 12 grandchildren; his stepmother, Mrs. Irene Lyons of Petoskey; two brothers, Fred of Illinois and Bernard of Grand Rapids; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Byrne of Howell, Mrs. Mildred Esfourth, Mrs. Gertrude Wager and Mrs. Kathleen Grossman, all of Petoskey. Requiem high mass will be sung at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church of Ionia at 9 p.m. Thursday.
