MacDonell, age 68, of Lake Odessa passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 in Ann Arbor. He was born on July 2, 1938 in Alpena and moved to Ionia well before starting school. Mac built life-long relationships while in Ionia which continued through his school years, professional life and into retirement. He possessed a natural athletic ability and in his younger years had a tremendous passion for basketball and handball. In his later years that passion included golf. Mac attended college at Aquinas in Grand Rapids where he graduated in 1960. He went on to earn his graduate degree at MSU where he also developed his skills as an avid Spartan fan. For over 30 years, Mac worked for the State of Michigan Department of Corrections, where he continued to build strong friendships with his colleagues. In his retirement years he enjoyed spending time at home on Jordan Lake, entertaining his friends with his cooking and pontoon piloting skills. During this time his morning ritual was centered around watching his favorite show Imus in the Morning. He truly loved listening to the I-man. He was preceded in death by his parents Dougall MacDonell and Bea MacDonell- Agostini; and step-father Ami Agostini. He is survived by his partner of 23 years and best friend, Rita; his bright and brilliant daughter, Jill; sister Mary; four nieces; several cousins; and close friends to numerous to list, all of whom were treasured members of his extended family. He was very honored and proud to be Grandpa Mac to Lindsay Renee. Mac was known for his quick wit and keen sense of humor. Those who knew him loved him, laughed with him, benefited from his extensive talents in the kitchen and will deeply miss him. Visitation will be held at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home at 220 Rich Street in Ionia on Monday, July 24th beginning at noon with a service to celebrate Mac's life at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials and tributes be sent to the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (nationalmssociety.org) to assist individuals like Mac's great friends Lynn and Carol.
