She was born Doris Hedwig Hansen on May 25, 1919 on Staten Island, New York. After high school, she graduated from the prestigious Pratt Institute where she became an accomplished artist/painter which led to her position as a designer for Norcross cards. She continued to paint for family and friends throughout her long life. Doris married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life George Fredrick Macfarlane on Sept. 21, 1940. they were married for 60 years when George pre-deceased her in September 2000. Doris and George raised their family in Ionia, Michigan. They had a vacation home in Boyne City and also lived in Bloomfield Hills and Marco Island Florida, They sailed, traveled, skied, and raised five sons all of whom adored her. After the death of her husband George, Doris lived in Marco Island, Florida, where she met and married William Laidig. Bill and Doris traveled worldwide into their eighties and enjoyed time with their extended families. She is survived by her sons Jeff (Carolee), Scott (Linda), Marshall j(Mary), Evan (Cathy), and John (Nancy). She is further survived by 10 grandchildren, Michelle Bischoff, Stacy Ruff, Ryan Macfarlane, Kevin Macfarlane, Dr. Anne Macfarlane, Gavin Macfarlane, Dr. Katie Sumnicht, Kristen Lachtman, Conor Macfarlane and Evan Macfarlane. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren, Brady and Hannah Bischoff, Mackenzie and Skylar Ruff, Lucas, Thomas and Sebastian Macfarlane, Nora and Clayton Macfarlane, Brendan and Lucy Peterson, Evan and Greta Scumnicht, and Essie Jane Macfarlane. There will be a family celebration Doris' life in Boyne City in August. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation would be appreciated.
