He was born July 29, 1933, in Milford, the son of Walter B. and Elma A. Smith Mach. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post 101 in Greenville. He married the former Beverly J. Patterson on June 6, 1953, in Westland. For 24 years, Russ worked in road construction, and in 1970 he started his own excavating business. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking, and was a member of the Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lou Ann Mach, on Aug. 26, 1973; and two brothers, Lloyd K. “Bud” Mach and James W. Mach. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Beverly Mach of Gowen; a son, Tony Mach of Plano, Texas; two sisters and brother-in-law, Myrtle Louise Walling of Westland, Jannette and Fred Harstead of Onaway; two sisters-in-law, Angie Mach of Dearborn Heights. Judith Mach-Volker of Canton; three siblings-in-law, Gary and Irene Patterson of Romulus, Pat and Mary Jo Patterson of Apollo Beach, Fla., Betty Lou and Jim Whitehill of Jackson; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and Jim and Candy Patterson and their son, Douglas, all of Charlotte. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Aaron I. Sorrels III, pastor of Settlement and St. Thomas Lutheran churches, officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Envelopes for memorial contributions to the charity of one’s choice are available at the funeral home, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today.
