The Portland Observer, Wednesday, November 18, 1903
E. E. Mackey, resident manager of a Grand Rapids ice company at Lake Odessa, 
was crushed by timbers falling from a car in that village last Thursday 
afternoon.  The stakes had been knocked from the side of the car which held 
the timber, and when Mr. Mackey went near the car to pick up a small piece of 
scantling which was in the way of the unloading, the whole load gave way and 
fell upon him.  He lived but a few moments after having been taken out from 
under the pile of timber.
