Dakota, by Mrs. J.M. York that her aunt, Mrs. Carrie Choate Madison, 88, had passed away following a lingering illness. The remains will arrive here this Thursday morning by train. Prayer service and burial will be made at Smyrna on the family lot. The hour will be as near ten o’clock as possible. Arrangements are in charge of Hall and Cichy. The deceased, who was the last living member of eight children in the family of Nathan and Caroline Choate, was born in Dorchester, Canada, Aug. 12, 1850. The family moved to Michigan when she was about six years of age. They settled on a farm near Kiddville, later moving to the Smyrna community. Miss Choate taught in many rural schools in both Ionia and Kent counties. In 1876 she was married to J. Bruce Madison, well-known Grattan young man, son of Brooks and Helen (Scranton) Madison. The young couple first lived at Vandalia, Mo., where both Mr. and Mrs. Madison served as postmaster. Later they went to Dakota as pioneers. After retiring from ranch life the coupled settled at Condo, where their remaining days were spent. Mr. Madison preceded his wife in death about 23 years ago. There were no children in the family, but close friends have been watchful of Mrs. Madison’s welfare and comfort through the declining years. She was a faithful Christian woman, the very prominent in the Methodist church, W.C.T.U. and all advanced community interests. Several nieces and nephews survive. The late Mrs. Hannah Purdy was an older sister of the deceased.
