Each week the Gazette has chronicled the passing of some one of our townspeople and last week word came of the passing of Mrs. Maggie Manecke at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sanford Kelly, in Ionia, March 15, 1923. Few of her friends knew that she was seriously ill, until news of her demise was received. Maggie Manecke was born in Wells county, Indiana, January 25, 1859 and her maiden name was Margaret Wort. At an early age she came with her parents to Gratiot county, where the family resided for a time, moving to Montcalm county when she was thirteen years old. Most of her life was spent in this county and for over fifty years has been a resident of Carson City. September 2, 1877, she was united in marriage to Charles A Miner, son of the late Winfield Miner of this village, and to this union came three children – John C. Miner of Chicago; Mrs. A. E. Law of Los Angeles, California; and Mrs. Sanford Kelly of Ionia. The children still survive and mourn the loss of a Christian mother who struggled hard to rear her children as they should be to become useful citizens. And everything that could be was done for her in the last illness. There are two sisters and two brothers who are left to mourn. October 20, 1897, she was united in marriage to Isaac Burt, who passed away January 4, 1908. March 14, 1910, she was married to Frank Manecke who passed beyond January 30, 1917. Those years of married life were the happiest ones in her life for she was amply provided for with enough to enjoy the remaining years which she did. Her father’s family and that of Mr. Miner’s were among the early settlers in this township. She was a consistent Christian and was a faithful attendant at all church services as long as health would permit. The funeral services were held at her late home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. E. H. Humphrey of the Congregational church and she was laid to rest in the Carson City cemetery by four of her nephews: Glen and Howard Wort of McBride, Charles Glazier of Middleton and Roy Smith of this place. Among the relatives who came to attend the last services were Mr. and Mrs. John C. Miner and son: Wm. E. of Chicago; John Wort of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Kelly and daughters, Marie and Francis, of Ionia; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wort and little son, Wilbur and Glen Wort of McBride; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wort and son-in-law, Charles Glazier of Middleton. Mrs. Manecke has gone to join her loved ones in that land beyond the gold and purple sunsets. She has entered into the reward that awaits those who have been faithful in their trust. Beautiful flowers expressed sympathy to the family in this hour of sorrow and bore testimony of neighborly kindness.
