Manley, 85, died July 20, 2011, at his home in Charlevoix. He was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Lake Odessa, to Alton and Dione (Stockford) Manley. He graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1994. After graduating, he and his father worked together farming in the Lake Odessa area. At age 19, Virgil entered the U.S. Army during World War II. Her served in the Army in Transportation and later transferred to the Air Corps as a teletype operator. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to civilian life and again was employed as a farmer. On June 25, 1955, he married Roberta (Bobbie) J. Guildford in Portland. They made their home in Lake Odessa until 2009, when he and Bobbie then relocated to Charlevoix. Virgil is survived by his wife, Bobbie; his son Jim, Douglas, Mich.; his daughter, Cathy (Bill) Silberhorn, Charlevoix; two grandchildren, Lauren (Ryan) Ringle, Petoskey and Scott Silberhorn, Charlevoix. He was preceded in death by his parents. A funeral service for Virgil F. Manley will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 23, at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. The Rev. Mark Jarvie will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will take place at the Danby Cemetery, Portland. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in Virgil’s name for The First Congregational Church of Lake Odessa, where he was a member; and the Hospice of Northwest Michigan, 220 W. Garfield, Charlevoix, MI 49720. The family would like to thank our friends and all the staff of hospice of NW Michigan for their help and support.
