Mann, 87, of Cedar Springs passed away on Sunday morning, June 2, 2002 at Heartland Health Greenview Manor. She was born in Maple Rapids, the daughter of Alton and Mary Clare (Schmidt) Kirby. She relied heavily upon her belief in God and enjoyed belonging to Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. A graduate of Lyons High School, she also played girls basketball. On July 1, 1933, she married Bernard James Mann in Hubbardston. Mrs. Mann first began working at the Ypsilanti Bomber Plant for 27 months during World War II. She worked on what was called “The Crib,” giving out parts for the B-21. For nine years she worked at W.W.W. and then with a moved to Holland, worked as a secretary for Holland Public Schools. She enjoyed traveling, and during the winter months she enjoyed being a “snowbird” and lived in Palmetto, Fla., walking the beaches and gathering shells to decorate mirrors to be gifts to others. Mrs. Mann was a very proper, outgoing lady. She loved to read a good book and would read Danielle Steele from cover to cover (the spicier, the better). She was a direct person who always told exactly the way it was. Mrs. Mann is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Jacqueline) McIntyre of Cedar Springs; her grandchildren, Janet (Dr. Edward Scherr of Clinton Conn., John (Dawn) Thompson of Rockford, Thomas Smith, Tamara Munro, Pamela Rhodes, Paula Smith, Kirby Lee, Pamela (Jack) Skinner of Coral, Mike (Janye) McIntyre of Kentwood and Cindy (Terry) Sasso of Grand Rapids; her sister, Mrs. Marie Evans of Muir; great-grandchildren, Mary Jandon Dykstra, John Benton Thompson, Jr. and Eric Edward Scherr; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard on Sept. 14, 1970; and a daughter, Mary Patrice Smith in 1986. The mass of Christian burial for Mrs. Mann will be offered at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Page as presider. Interment in Muir Cemetery. The Rosary will be prayed it 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Pederson Funeral Home Rockford. Friends may celebrate Mrs. Mann’s life with her family from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of mass at the church on Wednesday.
