Burial was to be in Portland. Mr. Manning and Joseph Simmons were riding the bean puller down the road when a car being driven by Andrew Van Zeh, of Grand Rapids, plowed into it. Mr. Simmons was slightly injured as were Mr. Van Zeh and Gerrit Stark, also of Grand Rapids, who was riding with him. Mr. Manning and Mr. Simmons were returning from the farm of Norman Lay where they had worked during the day. They had no rear light on the bean puller and Mr. Van Zeh failed to see it in time to avoid the crash. Mr. Manning was hurried to the office of Dr. Brown at Portland, but died shortly after reaching there. The accident occurred a mile and a half west of Portland. Mr. Van Zeh was exonerated.
