Mantlo, aged 88 of Lake Odessa, went Home to be with his Lord, and his beloved wife, Maxine, late Wednesday evening, June 4, 2009. Don was born in Fruita, Colorado on May 1, 1921 to Dick and Lela (Harris) Mantlo. He was a graduate of Grand Junction, Colorado High School, and received an athletic scholarship to Mesa College where he played baseball. Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 as a gunner on Liberty ships, and sailed on the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific. He was united in marriage to Maxine Cotton on May 9, 1946 in Grand Junction. They had celebrated 56 years of marriage before Maxine's death in 2003. Don had spent his working career as a bricklayer in Colorado, New Mexico, and throughout Michigan. He had a deep and abiding love for his country and exhibited his patriotism proudly. Don is survived by his children, Christine and Gary Wickham, Donald Mantlo, and Becky and Bob Swift; grandchildren, Megan (Buck Proctor) Wickham, Steffen Mantlo, Jennifer (Jerrod) Waterman, Andrea Mantlo, and Corinne Swift; great granddaughter, Molly Waterman; special niece, Connie Bish; and his former daughter-in-law, Lisa McCaul. Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; granddaughter, Morgan Wickham; sister, Maxine Kabasik; and brothers, Burton Mantlo, Wallace Mantlo, and R.T. Mantlo. The funeral service was held Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Koops Funeral Chapel. Burial with military honors was at Lakeside Cemetery. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made the Jackson-Mutschler VFW Post #4461 Scholarship Fund, or to the Lake Odessa Fire Department.
