Mapes, aged 18 years, died at St. Lawrence hospital Sunday night where she was taken last Thursday following an automobile accident just outside of Grand Ledge when another car and the Mapes car collided at the intersection of M-100 and US-16 causing almost instant death of Albert Housel, of Pontiac who was at the wheel relieving Mr. Mapes. The party which consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Mapes, Charles Mapes, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Housel of Pontiac and Mrs. Stelloh and daughter Aleditha of Grand Ledge had been guests Sunday October 31 at the home of Sherman Chase in South Ionia. They left Monday to visit relatives in Cadillac. Charles Mapes remained there and the rest of the party went to Grand Rapids. Thursday they left for Grand Ledge and Mrs. Stelloh and daughter remained there and Mr. and Mrs. Mapes and Mr. and Mrs. Housel were returning to South Ionia to spend the night and intended to leave for their homes in Pontiac Friday. Instead Mr. Housel met death and Mrs. Mapes the injuries which later caused her death. It is said that the large Mapes car was demolished and that the occupants were thrown 30 feet ahead of the car. Mrs. Mapes was a bride of less than four weeks. She was the daughter of Sherman Chase and was born and reared in the vicinity of South Ionia. Her mother, Mrs. Sherman Chase, died last May. Besides her husband and father she leaves two brothers, Myron and Harry Chase. She will be brought to the home of her father Monday afternoon and the funeral services will then be completed.
