John Oliver Mapes, 56, left this earth unexpectedly on September 21, 2006 in 
Grand Rapids. He was born on June 22, 1949 in Midland to Orville and Doris 
McRoberts Mapes. He attended Belding High School and later had a tour in 
Vietnam while serving in the United States Army.

He was a member of the Belding VFW Post No. 4406. John was preceded by his 
grandparents Orville and Nettie Mapes whom he loved very much and his father. 
John is survived by and will be sorely missed by his children; Jennifer and 
Ted Foote of Grand Rapids, Ryan Mapes of Ionia, Nettie and Brad Mickam of 
Grand Rapids and Joe Mapes of Chicago.

John is also survived by his eight loving grandchildren; Nick, Kirt, Ashlee, 
Dom, Ethan, Kennedy. Ian and Bradford, his mother Doris Millwood of Belding 
and his siblings; Steve and Paula Mapes, Jerry and Jackie Mapes, Debbie and 
Gary Christensen, Judy Vandenburg, Laurie Bowerman and Amy Gilbert along with 
his many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Johnson-
Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastors Ken Harger and Kendall Harger 
officiating.

Interment will follow in Otisco Township Cemetery with full military honors 
provided by the Belding VFW Post 4406. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 
p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to VFW Post 
4406.
