Marks, died quite suddenly in this village, at the house of her mother-in-law, well known in this community as “Old Mother Marks.” A few days since, and facts have since some to light that tend to show that the primary cause of her death was the cruel treatment inflicted upon her by her mother-in-law. Upon these facts being made known, proceedings were instituted to cause her arrest, of which she learned and yesterday started, with her children, for more secure quarters. Deputy Sheriff Sandborn, armed with a warrant went in pursuit and overtook her midway between this village and Lansing and brought her back. Upon being brought before Esq. Southard and the charges against her read, she was asked if she pled guilty to which her reply was, “No Sir’ee, not by a jug full.” Prosecuting Attorney not being expected until the arrival of the 1:30 express, her examination was postponed to two o’clock this afternoon. Full particulars next week. The Portland Observer, Tuesday, February 27, 1872: Verdict: “That Emily J. Marks came to her death by blows inflicted by a club or a sack of wood in the hands of Alnora Bartlett, commonly called Almira Marks, upon the right side, left shoulder, right arm, and upon the head of the said Emily J. Marks, on the 6th or 7th day of February, 1872, and by a cruel exposure of the person of the said Emily J. Marks on the 11th day of February, caused by the violence and cruel treatment of the said Almira Bartlett, which exposure resulted in the disease known as Pleuro Pneumonia, and was the immediate cause of the death of the said Emily J. Marks, and that the blows aforesaid was the cause of the premature confinement and sickness of the said Emily J. Marks,” The old lady was committed to the county jail to await her examination, which takes place to-day, before A. J. Southard, Esq.
