Jan. 29, 2010 Lois J. Martens, of Fulton and Gun Lake, died Jan. 27, 2010. Lois was born Aug. 22, 1936 near Portland, Mich. to Donald and Marion Jones Gregory. She attended Gibbs and Coon Schools and was graduated from the later in 1950. She was an alumna of Ionia High School (’54), Northwestern (BA, ‘60), Schoolcraft College (RN/AAS, ’75) and the University of Michigan (MS, ’80). As a young woman she worded for Fred Kidd (Jr. and Sr.) at the Ionia Sentinel- Standard and for Louise Black at Black’s Midway. Beginning at age 39, Lois practiced as a registered nurse at Grace Northwest Hospital in Detroit; VA Medical Center and Lakeview General Osteopathic Hospital in Battle Creek; Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall; Sturgis Hospital and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was a longtime member of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and had achieved CNOR designation. She attained the rank of major as a reservist in the US Army. Lois was a tremendous athlete, enjoying softball and bowling. She enjoyed weaving, woodworking and gardening. Lois was a voracious reader and attended Great Books for many years. She volunteered with Girl Scouts for 10 years. Lois enjoyed volunteering at the First Presbyterian Church Health Clinic in Kalamazoo. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Richland. On Aug. 31, 1957 at the Berlin Center United Methodist Church. , Lois was united in marriage to Ronald Martens. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Martens, three children; Alan (Cheryl) Martens of Holland, Camille (Martin) Subject of Leslie and Nathan Martens of Climax; seven grandchildren; Jasen (Christine) Rademacher, Sarah and Matthew Subject and Emma, Samuel, Elizabeth and Nicholas Martens; her siblings; Russell Gregory, Larry (Carol) Gregory, Carol Jean (Steve) Price, Jerry (Judy) Gregory and Richard (Marilyn) Gregory; a cousin, Robert (Diana) Jones and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Richland in the spring.
