Lake Odessa Times, 23 Jan 1908

The remains of Mrs. Wm. Martin, a former resident of this place, were brought 
here from Durand Monday for burial.  The funeral was held from the M. E. 
church.  Rev. A. T. Luther spoke from a text in II Cor. 1, 3-4 – “The God of 
all Comfort Who Comforteth us in all our Tribulation.”  The choir gave three 
beautiful selections, “Beyond,” by Bonar; “Welcome to Rest,” by F. H. Bently; 
“Pass Under the Rod,” by Dale.

Emma Lucy Stilson, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hawley Stilson was born in 
Barry Co., Mich., Jan. 9, 1854, and departed this life at Durand, Shiawassee 
Co., Mich., Jan. 17, 1908.  Age 54 years and 8 days.  Cause of death was 
paralysis.

She spent her early childhood in Lenawee Co.  On July 27, 1877 she was united 
in marriage to Wm. Martin of Ionia Co.  To this union seven children were born, 
three sons and four daughters, of which four are still living, the three 
daughters preceding her to the world beyond.  She, with her husband, settled on 
a farm three miles east of this place, remaining there until the fall of 1890, 
when they moved to Woodbury.  Remaining there until the spring of 1906, when 
she came to this village and from here went to Durand last September, 1907.

She was converted in 1894 and joined the U.B. church at Woodbury.  On coming to 
Lake Odessa she joined the M.E. church of which she was a faithful member until 
death.  She was highly respected by all who knew her.  She leaves to mourn 
their loss, a husband, three sons, (Henry, Franklin and Forrest, of Durand) one 
daughter, (Mrs. Lois Brown of Grand Rapids) two grandchildren and a host of 
friends.
