Martin, 53, of 331 Morse street died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon at Ionia county park where he had gone to assist the Fishing and Hunting club with recreational activities. He was a charter member and past president of the organization. Martin had just arrived to assist other club members in preparing the toboggan slides for the winter sports program about 2 p.m. As he approached the slides he apparently became ill and asked that a nearby member get his car. He took a heart pill but collapsed. He had been treated for a heart condition. He was placed in a car and rushed to Ionia County Memorial hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mr. Martin was born February 21, 1909 at Martin in Allegan county, the son of Fred E. and Mae Martin. He came to Ionia at the age of 16 and lived with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Moore. November 11, 1933, he was married in Ionia to Jessie Moore and lived at the present residence since 1944. He was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren church, Elks lodge and was past master of Ronald Grange. He was also one of the organizers of Babe Ruth baseball league for boys. For the past two years Mr. Martin was employed as production foreman at Falarski Meat Packing company in Grand Rapids. He previously had worked at Ionia Creamery and Peschke Packing company. Surviving besides his wife, Jessie, are two daughters, Mrs. Donald Helmer of route three, and Marcia Martin at home; two grandchildren; his stepmother, Mrs. Augusta Martin of Montague; seven brothers, Harry Martin of Ionia, Harley and Gerald of Dearborn, Ivan and Alva of Muskegon, and Vernon and Lester of Montague; two sisters, Mrs. Leona Krantz and Mrs. Lucille Keift of Muskegon. One sister preceded him in death. The body will be at Stone-Kauffman funeral home until noon Tuesday when it will be removed to Zion EUB church for service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Ray Fassett will officiate and interment will be at Easton cemetery.
