Martin (known as Jay) died at his home in Danby township on Saturday, August 4th, aged 50 years. His death was caused by a complication of diseases, but dropsy and gangrene were the immediate causes. On account of the character of the disease and it being impossible to keep the body longer, funeral services were held from Danby Grange hall on Sunday afternoon last by Rev. Ward of Eagle, and burial made in Danby cemetery. Mr. Martin was a native of Ionia county, having been born in Orange April 21st, 1850. He was married to Laura J. Davenport in 1873, and she and one daughter, Myrtie, survive him, together with one brother, Ed, four sisters, and a host of friends. He was a kind husband, indulgent father, and firm friend and neighbor. When Mr. Martin’s father-in-law, the late Chester Davenport, was sick with gangrene, he attended him much of the time, and many think he then contracted the disease which resulted in his death. Physicians say, however, that had this been the case the disease would have shown itself before it did; and while it may possibly have had something to do with it, it is not probable.
