Martin, 75, of Ionia died Thursday morning in Highland General Hospital, Sebring, Fla. Born in Marcellus July 9, 1909, she was the daughter of John and Lurinda Harrington Gates. She moved as a girl with her family to Ionia and attended Ionia High School, graduating with the class of 1926. She married Harry Martin in Ionia July 11, 1927, and they made their home in the Ionia area, farming on Dildine Road from 1938 to 1972, when the retired and moved into Ionia city. They had spent recent winters in Florida. They observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1977. She was along-time member of Zion United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband; three sons, Gerald of Carpenter, Wyo., Donald of Ionia, and James of Eaton Rapids; three daughters, Joan Hickok of Belding, Mrs. Don (Lucille) Bates of Ionia, and Mrs. Walter (Nancy) Gale of Plymouth; 33 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Fisher and Mrs. Arthur (Genevieve) Knickrehm of Englewood, Fla. A brother preceded her in death. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kay William officiating, assisted by a Martin’s grandson, the Rev. Rick Martin of Ionia Open Bible Church. Burial will be in Easton Cemetery. The family will be at Leddick Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial has been established in care of the funeral home, for Zion United Methodist Church.
