Harry was born May 26, 1904 in Allegan County, the son of Frederick and Chloe Mae (Ludlow) Martin. He grew up in Allegan and attended Allegan area schools. Mr. Martin was married July 11, 1926 in Ionia to Helene Irene Gates and she preceded him in death in Dec. 1984 after 58 years of marriage. He married Jessie Stoddard on Feb. 23, 1988, in Ionia, and she survives. Harry farmed his entire life and was member of Soil Conservation, Michigan Milk Producers and Farm Bureau and received several awards from these organizations. He was also a member of the Ionia Lions Club and was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church for 75 years. Harry loved to fish, watch sports and travel. He was a gentleman who always watched out for his family and he was adored by his grandchildren. Harry will be dearly missed by his friends and family. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Jessie; three daughters, Joan Hickok of Ionia, Lucille (Don) Bates of Ionia and Nancy (Walt) Gale of Plymouth; one son, Jim (Gloria) Martin of Charlotte; two step-daughters, Deanna (Don) Helmer of Ionia and Marcia McCoy of Ionia; two stepsons, George (Betty) Stoddard of Auburn and Ed (Mary) Stoddard of St. Marys, Kansas; 53 grandchildren; 64 great- grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren; one sister, Luella Keift of Muskegon; one brother, Alva (Marie) Martin of Muskegon; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special neighbor, Rene Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen; twin daughters at birth; two sons, Gerald and Donald Martin; one stepson, Dan McCoy; two sisters and six brothers. Funeral services for Mr. Harry Martin will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the Zion United Methodist Church with Pastor Arlo Vandlen and Jerry Martin officiating. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Monday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 8:30 p.m. from Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia.
