Frieda was born on June 3, 1921, in Ronald Twp., Ionia County, to Otto and Lena (Craft) Schnicke. On March 29, 1941 she married Russell John Martin, who died on March 7, 2005. During World War II, she worked at the AC Spark Plug factory in Ionia, and as a Nurse’s Aide at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. Freida also obtained her Cosmetologist’s license in 1962 and kept up the license until 2007, having worked for a short time at that craft. She was a talented artist, and displayed her paintings at art shows in Texas as a winter Texan. Frieda was a homemaker, seamstress, and loved to cook. Mrs. Martin was a life member of Chapter #150 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Hold/Mason. She was a member of the Miller Road Bible Church in Lansing where she and her husband had made their home for 64 years before moving to Lake Odessa to live with their daughter, Karen. Survivors include two daughter, Karen Anway of Lake Odessa, and Pamela Martin of Lansing; grandsons, Travis (Amy) Anway of Grandville, Jason Anway of Lake Odessa and Matthew Martin of Lansing; brother, LeRoy (Mamie) Schnicke of Ionia; sister-in-law, Kathleen Martin of Ionia; great granddaughter, Elsa Rae Anway of Grandville; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Frieda was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; brother, Karl Schnicke; sister, Reva Comer; and niece, Carol Mattila. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at the Woodard Lake Cemetery in Ronald Twp., Ionia County. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010, at the Lakewood United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa. Memories and messages may be left at www.koopsfc.com.
