No disease bothered the sturdy pioneer, but it was simply a case of the human machine against time and the latter winning out as usual. Mrs. Martin was born in Germany on October 19, 1835 and eighteen years later emigrated to this country and going to Tiffin, Ohio, and working as a domestic for some of the oldest and best known families in that city. She could relate many interesting stories about the first voyage which she made to this country and her early experiences here before she had got so that she knew American ways and the English language. She was married to George Martin in Tiffin, Ohio, and in the year 1866 they, with their children, the late Jacob Martin and Mrs. Lena Engemann, of this city, returned to Germany, intending to remain there. In the year 1867 they decided to return to this country and coming to this county, located on the farm directly across from the Miriam Catholic church and which is now owned by George Krupp and where she resided continuously until a few years ago when she came to this city making her home with her son, Jacob Martin for a short time and for the past two years with her daughter, Mrs. Lena Engemann. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. Lena Engemann, Mrs. Gertrude Honson and Mrs. Louis Scheidt, also a son, Peter Martin, all of this city or immediate vicinity. Twenty-one grandchildren, of whom are the editor is one and twelve great grandchildren also survive to mourn the loss of a good and loving old soul. The funeral was held from St. Joseph Catholic church in this vicinity yesterday morning, at nine o’clock, Rev. Fr. John M. Zindler celebrating a Solemn Requiem High Mas in her honor and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery at Miriam by the side of her husband who had preceded her in death thirteen years ago.
