Martin, aged 57 years, for many years a resident of this city and very well known in both this city and the Miriam district where he lived before coming to Belding, died at his home at 223 Leonard street, Wednesday night of last week, following an illness of six months duration, which became acute two months ago when he submitted to an operation for gastric ulcers at the Belding hospital, where he remained a patient until several weeks ago when he was removed to his home. Mr. Martin was born on October 28, 1873, and was the son of George and Theresia Martin, pioneer residents of the German settlement at Miriam. On April 14, 1903 he was united in marriage to Ola Belle Nichols, of this city and to this union four children were born: Clarence, Smith, Francetta, (now Mrs. Archie Myers) and Teresa, all of this city and who with the widow are left to mourn their loss. Three sisters, Mrs. Lena M. Engemann, Mrs. Gertrude Honson and Mrs. Jacob Englebert, all of this city, also survive. Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at nine o’clock from St. Joseph’s Catholic church, with Rev. Fr. Lawrence L. Door officiating and burial was in River Ridge cemetery. Many friends gathered at the church as a means of extending and paying their last respects to the deceased and a large concourse of people followed the remains to the grave. Dearest father, thou hast left us; Gone to join the angel band; God knew best when he bereft us, Of thy loving, guiding hand. Oft we think of thee, dear father, Long to see thy loving face’ But, if James thought “Twere better We will bear it through God’s Grace.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/m/martin28270nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
