She was baptized in the Presbyterian church, October 8th, 1837, of which she was a member until she came to American, where she united with the Methodist church at Palo, where she was an active member until failing health prevented her attending. At the age of 23 years she was married to Robert Martin of the same place. They came to American in the year of 1872, where they resided a period of six months in Livingston county, Michigan after which they moved to Ronald, Ionia, where they settled on and cleared the farm known as the Gilbert Yates farm, and where they resided for many years. After the death of her husband, April 14, 1904, she lived with her youngest son, William A. Martin, about sixteen years. Nearly 3 1/2 years ago she came to live with her son, Robert Martin, where she died July 11, 1923, aged 86 years, 1 month and 7 days. She was the mother of nine children, six sons and two daughters surviving her; namely Robert, Eliza A., Thomas F., John J., Irwin, James K., Phoebe E. and William A. Martin. One son died at the age of four years. Although her death was not unexpected, as her health was frail and because of her many years, yet the sadness of the loss of a loving mother fell on the family and the community who had been for years her neighbors and friends. She was a woman whom to know well and was to respect and love, with a character of sterling integrity, unwavering in her adherence to what she considered just and right. Besides her sons and daughters, she leaves to our their loss 36 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.
