He was born in Saint Ignace, on Nov. 17, 1938, the son of Willis and Jean Elizabeth (Jones) Martin. Both parents preceded him in death. John attended Saint Ignace schools and worked on fruit and vegetable farms for most of his life. He married Mary Belle Blackmer. She preceded him in death on March 25, 1997. John was great at telling stories about the highlights of his past, he was also a great troubleshooter and could fix almost anything. He was proud of his American Indian heritage and served as an Elder in the Sault St. Marie Tribe of the Chippewa Indians. John leaves to cherish his memory his children, Brandi (Rodney Casey) Martin of Crystal, Jeanie Martin of Belding, Terry (Shawn) Haller of Stanton, and Jeffrey (Thea) Haller of Crystal; grandchildren, Crysta (Daniel Vansconis) Martin, Samantha (Austin Jewell) Spencer, Corrine Casey, Dylan Casey-Martin, Zachary Casey-Martin, John Mosher, Brandi Mosher, Skylar (Nichole Martineli) Martin, Alexander Landes, Danika Nease, Evan Nease, Devon (Taylor Davis) Cardoza, Jeffery Haller II, Todd Haller, Jake Haller, Jason Haller and Sheridan Haller; great-grandchildren, Brice Bentley, Brayden, Scout and Athena; a sister, Carmen (Joe) Green of Saint Ignace, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a two brothers, Kirk and Albert and triplet sisters, Lilly, Agnes and Lila. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Verdun Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 303 S. Bridge St., Belding. Interment will take place when weather permits at Evergreen Cemetery in Sheridan. Those wishing to express sympathy are welcomed in lieu of flowers, to consider a memorial contribution to the wishes of the family.
