Martin, 83, died Monday afternoon at 4:30 at the home of his son, John H. Martin, 318 Pearl street, following an illness of two weeks. Mr. Martin suffered a severe stroke about two weeks ago and had been in a critical condition since. He was born in Wandott county, Ohio, January 20, 1852, and when a small child moved with his parents to Seneca county, Ohio, where he resided until 1860 when he moved with his parents to Ionia county and settled in Orange township. They were early pioneers of Ionia county and helped clear away the wilderness and make roads in that township. In 1874 he was married to Ann Brownfield, of Sebewa, and the resided in Orange where he was a carpenter and farmer, until 1912 when they came to Ionia, and have since resided with their son, John. He was a member of the West Sebewa Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife; two sons, John H. and Silas W. Martin, Pearl street; and one daughter, Mrs. Jennie L. Hummel, of Sunfield. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Bradley funeral home with Rev. Paul L. Stewart, pastor of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be at the family lot at Balcom cemetery.
