Mason, 84, Ionia, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 1997, at Heartland Health Care Center, Ionia. He was born March 17, 1913, in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of Ray and Minnie Vanocker Mason. The family moved to Marshall, Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, coming to Ionia at his age of 12. He had lived in Ionia since. He was married to the former Verna Wetherbee in 1931 in Indiana. She preceded him in death in October 1981, after a 50-year marriage. He had been employed at Peshke Meat Co. for 30 years and the Grand Valley Indian Summer Vinegar plant, retiring at the age of 65. He was a former member of the Ionia Moose Lodge and served in the National Guard for 10 years. His hobbies were fishing and his family. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Keith Edwards of Ionia, Jean and Ronald Peterman of Grand Rapids; one son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Judy Mason of Fenwick; 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Rayburn Mason of New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Margie Mason; one great-grandson, Matthew Edwards; one brother, Jack Mason; and one sister, Geraldine Weller. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Ionia, with Pastor James Frank of Galilee Baptist Church, Saranac, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rich St. Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia County Commission on Aging Meals Program or the Ionia County Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
