R. Mason arrived from Spain, N. Dakota, Saturday, March 29th, and the last sad rites were held in the home of her brother, Chester M. Slayton, Sunday. A large number of the old neighbors and friends and members of the Order of Eastern Star were present to pay their last respects to one of the pioneers of the township, a grand, good and noble character, who resided here for many years. Fanny M. Slayton was born July 4, 1826, in Middlesex, N.Y., she moved to Michigan with her parents in September 1847, and taught school in Victor and Richmond, N.Y., and in Vergennes, Otisco, and Cannon, Michigan. She married Wm. R. Mason May 15, 1853, at her father’s in Grattan, and resided on a farm in Grattan, until the death of her husband September 6, 1901. She was Post Master at Grant for many years. After her husband’s death she lived with her son E. J. Mason until he sold the old farm and moved to Hagerman, New Mexico. Since 1903 she has resided with her daughter, Ina S. Stocking, at Spain, S. Dakota, constancy and consistency has marked every day of her life. She died March 26, 1912, being eighty-five years, eight months and twenty-two days old. Her remains now rest by the side of those of her husband in the family lot in the cemetery near the old home.
