Mason, 90, a resident of Ionia for more than 70 years, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at Eckerts nursing home. He was born September 7, 1865 in Janesville, Wis., the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Mason. His father was captain of Company G, 51st regiment in the Civil war. Mr. Mason moved to Lowell with his family as a small boy and attended schools there. When a young man he came to Ionia where he was associated with the A. S. Wright dry goods store for 12 years. For many years he was a salesman of womens suits, coats and furs and traveled the middle and far west by horse and buggy and later by automobile until his retirement. August 1, 1888 he was married to Nancy E. Jennings in Ionia who was principal of the Ionia grammar school. She preceded him in death February 17, 1948. Mr. Mason was a member of the Presbyterian church, the oldest member of Ionia Lodge No. 36 F. and A. M., a life member of the Ionia Elks lodge and was chaplain of the lodge for twenty years. Surviving is one sister, Miss Catherine (Kitty) Mason of Ionia. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 at Myers funeral home with the Rev. George L. Rentschler officiating. Interment will be in the mausoleum at Highland Park cemetery. Bearers will be members of the Ionia Elks lodge.
