The Ionia Standard, Friday, July 26, 1889
On Sunday afternoon Phinias Mather, of Lake Odessa, aged 18 years, was drowned 
in Jourdan Lake while bathing.  He was unable to swim, and getting into deep 
water perished before assistance could reach him.  It was nearly 2 ½ hours 
before his body was recovered.  Mather was a grandson of Ezra Spencer, who 
suicided a few months ago, and leaves a widowed mother.
