She was 82 years old The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, the Rev. D. E. Millard officiating. Mrs. Mathews was born in Genesee county, New York. Her grandfather was a Revolutionary soldier, her father fought in the war of 1812 and two brothers went to the front on the Union side at the opening of the Civil war. At the age of twenty years, in 1847, she was married to the late Barney Mathews and two years later the couple came to Michigan and settled in Orange. Eight children were born to them, six of whom survive the mother. They are Charles S., Hiram B. and George B. of Portland, Mrs. E. E. Smith of Corfu, N.Y., John of Ithaca and Mrs. Dema Cole of Berkeley, Calif. The husband died ten years ago, since which time Mrs. Mathews has made her home with her son, Hiram. Mrs. Mathews lived a quiet life, devoted to her children and the home interests but many friends and neighbors will miss the warm friendship she bestowed on those who came in contact with her.
