He was born in the township of Ardee, County Lough, Ireland, Oct. 21, 1819, and came to Ionia county 55 years ago and settled upon the farm where he died, having resided there continuously ever since. For many years when the country was newer Mr. Mathews was employed by Josiah Dilley in buying stave bolts and timber and in this capacity he became well known throughout many parts of the state. Beside a widow the following children survive him: IIiram, who made his home with his parents; Charles, of Portland; Mrs. C. Cole, of Baker City, Oregon; George, of Flint; Mrs. Dr. Smith, of Corfu, N.Y. Mr. Mathews had been confined to the house since February last. He was a highly respected man. Funeral services were conducted from his late home on Tuesday afternoon of this wek by Rrev.
