JOHN B. MATHEWS
John B. Mathews passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 23, 2017, after a 
valiant battle with COPD. His last moments were spent with Debbie, his wife of 
42 years, and his children Emily (Tom Wolan) Mathews and Sarah (Troy) Tahvonen. 
John was 64 years old.

For more than 20 years,John and Debbie were the proud owners of Mathews Hardware 
(Later Mathews Paint and Decorating) in downtown Portland. John was active in 
the community, serving on numerous boards and committees, and always enjoyed 
sharing a morning cup of coffee at the store with his neighbors. He worked hard 
and played hard; he loved loud music, golfing, gardening, photograph, the 
Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines, and his family. In addition to his wife 
and daughters, John is survived by his sister Ann Donoghue, his two 
grandchildren Kellan and Sienna Tahvonen, and extended family and friends. John 
was a wonderful son, husband, father and friend.  He will be deeply missed.

John's family invite you to a celebration of his life on Saturday, July 8, from 
noon-3 p.m. at the Portland Country club (4901 Divine Hwy., Portland, Mi 48875), 
where John loved to play in his golf league and then enjoy a cold beer.
